Weston-super-Mare residents of the town centre are expected to die younger

A ‘shocking’ disparity in life expectancy in Weston means town centre residents are expected to die as much as 14 years younger than people living elsewhere in the town, ‘appalling’ statistics reveal.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics suggest life expectancy in North Somerset is just above the national average of 79.2 for men and 82.9 for women.

But closer scrutiny reveals a ‘big divide between the populations of Weston Central ward and South ward and the rest of the district’.

Life expectancy for people living is South and Central wards is as low as 71.6, yet in Winterstoke Ward – which borders South ward – you can expect to live until the grand old age of 85.8.

Weston Hillside does not fare much better, with a male life expectancy of 75.2.

More rural areas of the district fall in line with the national averages.
