Our statement following the conviction of Lucy Letby

Lucy Letby was found guilty on the 21st August 2023 of murdering seven babies at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016, while working as a nurse. She was also convicted of trying to kill six other infants.

"We join the nation in sadness following Lucy Letby’s conviction for the murder and attempted murder of infants in her care. We send our deepest sympathies to the families affected by Letby’s crimes and acknowledge the bravery of both staff and patients who voiced their concerns and came forward to share their stories and experience - ultimately leading to Letby’s conviction.

"Healthwatch Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire collect and share the experiences of local people, to support and improve local health and social care services. Everyone that uses NHS and social care deserves safe, timely, and effective care."

In a statement published on their website, NHS England said: 

"Lucy Letby committed appalling crimes that were a terrible betrayal of the trust placed in her, and our thoughts are with all the families affected, who have suffered pain and anguish that few of us can imagine. 

Colleagues across the health service have been shocked and sickened by her actions, which are beyond belief for staff working so hard across the NHS to save lives and care for patients and their families."
