Local people invited to help name new health centre in Weston-super-Mare

People living in Weston-super-Mare are being invited to help choose the name of a brand new neighbourhood health centre being built in the town.

The new facility forms part of a £15 million investment in primary and community healthcare and is being developed to improve access to health and care services for Weston’s growing population.

The health centre will house a GP practice, which will replace the current Graham Road Surgery, as well as community and mental health services.

Construction on the new building on the Rugby Club development on Sunnyside Road North started in February. It is expected to open in summer 2027 and will provide health and care services for up to 12,500 people.

Before the new health centre opens, the NHS is asking local people and stakeholders to help decide what it should be called.

The aim is to choose a name that reflects the local area, community identity, and values, and feels welcoming and inclusive.

David Jarrett, Chief Strategic Commissioning Officer at NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board, said:

“This is an exciting step for primary care in Weston-super-Mare. We want the new health centre to feel like it belongs to the community, and involving local people in choosing its name is an important part of that. We look forward to hearing the ideas and suggestions of residents as we work towards opening the doors in summer 2027.”

All suggested names will be reviewed against NHS naming criteria. A shortlist of suitable names will then be considered by a panel, before the final name is chosen through a public vote.

Councillor Mike Bell, Leader of North Somerset Council, which is working in partnership with the NHS on the new health centre, said:

“We are proud to support the development of this new health centre, which will make a real difference to people’s access to primary, community and mental health services in central Weston. Inviting local people to help choose its name ensures the centre reflects our community and the values we share.”

Jason Collard, Managing Director of StudioHIVE, said:

“The new health centre will be transformative for thousands of people in Weston-super-Mare and the new name will be another important step towards completion.

“We have worked tirelessly with our partners, in particular North Somerset Council and the NHS, to make this bold vision a reality and will continue to do so as we begin to near completion.”

Members of the public are invited to help name the new health centre by completing the online submission form. It closes at midnight on Sunday 12 July.

Paper copies of the survey are also available on request via Graham Road Surgery for those who are unable to take part online.
