Nailsea School pupils takeover Healthwatch North Somerset

Healthwatch North Somerset invited students from Nailsea Secondary School for a ‘takeover’ on November 21st 2017.

We joined many other organisations on the 10th anniversary of the National Takeover Challenge, set up by the Children’s Commissioner, giving the chance to young people to get involved in decision making, share their priorities and enjoy a unique and creative perspective on work. The Tyntesfield Medical Group of GP practices and Healthwatch North Somerset devised a range of activities for eight students aged from 14 to 16 who joined us for the day.

The students designed and distributed health news on our Twitter account, had a behind-the-scenes tour of the Tower House Practice, took part on a board meeting on making the most of patient feedback and carried out face-to-face engagement in the market and surgery.

They gave us their perspective on Health & Social Care services, with the majority wanting more support for Mental Health in schools, more funding for NHS services, more information on where to find support groups, particularly for mental health, and more money into reducing late diagnosis or wrong diagnosis of health conditions.

The students particularly enjoyed designing the social media tweets, taking part in the board meeting, working to come up with realistic solutions to problems & the surgery tour.
